French Provincial Outdoor Dining Side Chair — Ivory

French & Hamptons Style

The Hamptons Provincial Outdoor Dining Chair carries the collection’s ladder back in its simplest and most useful form. Three horizontal rails, each shaped with a gentle double curve — higher at the centre, dipping at the ends — rise to a crest rail centred on a hand-carved scallop shell and flanked by turned acorn finials. The apron below is shaped and scalloped with a second carved shell, and the legs are cabriole. Because the rails are shaped rather than flat, the chair is comfortable without a cushion, which is a small thing that decides whether people stay for the second bottle.

  • Solid plantation teak, traditionally jointed and hand-carved
  • Shaped three-rail ladder back with turned acorn finials
  • Hand-carved scallop shell to the crest rail and to the front apron
  • Cabriole legs — no stretchers, no bracing, no visible hardware
  • Tie-on seat cushion in plain ivory outdoor canvas (the blue toile de Jouy version is its own product — linked below); also supplied bare
  • Standard or reticulated quick-drain outdoor foam

A Carved Ladder Back Dining Chair for French Provincial and Hamptons Terraces

Most dining settings pair six side chairs with two carvers at the ends. The 1800 dining table seats six closed and eight extended; the 2250 seats eight closed and ten extended. Specify the toile for a setting with some personality, or the plain ivory where the carved frames should carry the room on their own. Custom fabric is available on request, including a customer’s own material.

Solid plantation teak, traditionally jointed and hand-carved in our Indonesian workshop. Finished in Rubio Monocoat limewash as standard — a hardwax oil that penetrates the timber rather than coating it, so the grain remains visible and the surface can be spot-repaired rather than stripped. Also available raw, or in any of our house finishes.

Comfortable without a cushion, better with one — and the reason a lunch outside runs into the afternoon.

Care: Teak requires no sealing or oiling. Left uncovered the limewash mellows toward silver-grey over one to two seasons; under cover it holds its pale honey tone. An annual wash with mild soapy water is all the timber asks. Cushions should be brought under cover overnight and protected in poor weather.
