How to use art to complete your interior
Decorating walls with art goes back to over 35,000 years, and it is something that is part of what defines us as humans and possibly, together with music and literature, is one of our greatest achievements! Art is a window into the imaginary, and just like no mind should be without imagination, a home should not be without its beauty and uplifting quality.
When working as an interior designer and decorating a home, I always try to understand what type of art is meaningful to the client. I take into consideration their cultural background, where they have lived, the places they loved visiting, and out of all that I get a sense as to what will best suit them.
Art on a wall is also a way to bring perspective and transform the wall from a barrier into a view, a view that takes us onto a memory, a new place or into nature. Paintings and even prints can also act as a pivotal medium that integrates the colours and decor of the room, the blue of a mat border in a picture can relate to the blue fabric of the sofa so that it feels related.
Ultimately, the quality of relationships between colours, surfaces and shapes in a room is what gives us the feeling of togetherness, that, in turn is what gives us the feeling of harmony. So, my advice to you is, don’t forget the art on the wall. When you come home their vistas can feed and uplift the soul, and after a hard day’s work, who doesn’t need that….
Happy decorating!
