Gilded finishes have been traditional in all furniture and interiors throughout Europe and in particular in France, Italy and Spain. Gilded finishes vary in both the type of metal used – it can also be silver or copper – as well as the final finish, it can be burnished bright or antiqued with special powders and compounds.
Another element in gilding is the option of showing the colour that is underneath by gently rubbing through. Traditionally the under-colour is terracotta red but it can be white or any other colour depending on the method used.
Here are our standard gilded finishes though we also offer a great variety of special gilded finishes. Everything can be customized from the tone of the red underneath to the level of rub-through and antiquing.
Gold wax trim on mouldings and carvings with or without rub-through to the under colour is also a great option. This is more cost effective than traditional gold leafing.
Leaf gilding in either Oil gild (Italian gilding) method, this can be to the whole surface or just mouldings and carvings. This is the traditional gilding method and gives an amazing gold effect. The process is multi-staged, requires an expert and uses real gold.
Leaf gilding French gold (also called water gilding) for a highly gold burnished look.
The gives a very smooth effect but requires great skill.
