An Introduction to Dining Chairs

February 26, 2018

In any dining room, the chairs around the dining table really set the mood and tone of elegance in a home.

At Christophe Living we have had great success with our dining chairs over the past 30 years, providing individually carved and finished pieces for you.

The importance of quality

A chair is one of the few items of furniture in the home that is moved constantly. As such it needs to be strong and long lasting, as well as comfortable and beautiful. Our chairs are hand carved in Italy from European beech, a strong yet lightweight timber. There is a history going back 300 years of Italian craftsmen making French style furniture, fully refining and perfecting the carving and construction methods.

European beech allows for a wide variety of stains and finishes from pale walnut to dark – our most popular being light antique walnut – with hand staining that highlights the beauty of the mouldings and the carvings.

The carved chairs are then finished in Sydney, which means we can offer a wide range of upholstery details and finishes such as studs, or contrast piping. The seats can be webbed or spring with either a dome seat or square edged capped seat.

Dining chair options

Fully upholstered chairs are great for large dining rooms where the extra comfort and richness of fabric is welcomed. One of our most popular upholstered chairs is the Perigord, which has a curve in the back going both ways offering exceptional comfort and support. We’ve nicknamed this chair our “4 hour chair” as you can extend your time at the dining table, without the need to break up the conversation by moving to a lounge.

Our Louis 15 chairs all come with the option of upholstered or cane back. A cane back is great to create a more airy light feeling for smaller rooms. The gracious curves of the cabriole legs add in a quintessential French quality to your dining experience.

Another popular option is the Louis 16 dining chair, which is offered in an oval or square back, upholstered or in cane. With its turned fluted, tapered legs the Louis 16 chair has always represented the essence of timeless French elegance. Its restrained neoclassical lines sit comfortably in both a modern and traditional home.

With all of these chairs, the choice of fabric is what will make them more formal or causally elegant. The current predilection for French linen is perfect for combining the classical lines of the chair with a more modern setting, giving it a French elegance that is casual yet sophisticated.

The comfort and beauty of a chair has the ability to truly enhance the quality of conversation and wellbeing.
