The Craftsman’s Workshop

September 27, 2015

Furniture workshop

I remember as a child living in Italy, being fascinated watching craftsmen at work:
the skill, the dedication, the tools and the often messy workshops out of which such beautiful things were made!

Woodworking tools
I think as children our first participation with the outside world is to make things… to build, to craft, to draw….
It mirrors our primitive drive to use the materials in our environment to make our lives easier and to exercise our creativity.
Craftsman making furniture
While many factories have replaced the old craftsmen workshops, they still pull the string of hearts and make us dream….
I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to be trained by great craftsmen in France and Italy, I now occasionally get involved in making or painting something and it’s still a pleasure. Working now mainly as  designer I still have the eye of a craftsman. It’s an eye that looks at details, the materials and the tools that will compose –with a dedication for excellence and pride– the finished piece.
